Encarnación, Paraguay Expatriat Community

Here in Encarnación there is an expat group meetup twice a month. I'm surprised by the number of expats in this small city. Many of those expatriates (expats) come from Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian World Congress, there are supposedly 40,000 Ukrainians living in Paraguay. Ukrainians first came from Argentina, just across the Paraná River from Encarnacón, in the 1920s due to the economic problems at that time. They started arriving in Argentina in the late 19th century.

Paraguarí, Paraguay, with a population around 23,000, was founded in 1775. Paraguarí is called "Cradle of National Independence", since in the Cerro Mba'e fight, of January 19, 1811, the Paraguayan army defeated the Spanish army from Buenos Aires. That win lead to the independence of Paraguay. In the early-to-mid 17th century the Jesuits were expelled from Paraguay by order of the King of Spain, then soon after, the town of Paraguarí was founded.

Asunción, Paraguay, my second visit to this city, the capital of Paraguay. I wrote quite a lot about Asunción in May 2023 after my first visit, so this time I the blog for Asunción will be shorter. First, it's raining. On and off all day, each day, so my chances of exploring more of the city have been quite limited. Also, the charger thing for my laptop computer died so I had to spend a good chunk of one morning looking for a laptop service shop that had a replacement charger. Then, I spent more time walking around looking for a loundry service. So those two tasks ate up half of my first day here. The remainder of the day was a washout due to the constand drizzly rain.

Formosa, Argentina, a city of about 235,000 in the urban area, sits on the river border with Paraguay, a few hours south of Asunción, Paraguay (capital of Paraguay). I visited Formosa about a year and-a-half ago and wrote that I liked this small city, I also wrote that it is quiet. And that still stands. And, now they are doing more reclamation work alongside the river which will extend the park space.
