Billiards, Football and another strike

July 5, 2013

These two and 3 or 4 more live in a sports park here in Barranquilla.

First off, last week I mentioned a bit about many roadside bars, restaurants and billiards places. Billiards if very popular here in Colombia. There are many, many billiards places all over the city, in just about every neighborhood. They may have from 2 billiards tables on up to a dozen or more. Most are just a few tables and a refrigerator for beer. Many of the roadside bars, if you can call them a bar, are just a small building, often no bigger than a typical American backyard shed, and some tables and chairs outside under an awning. The small building is just for storing the beer.

George told me is was a mango.

Santa Marta, sunburn, new apartment

A street in Santa Marta, the classic architecture includes many balconys.

Last sunday I visited a small tourist city about an hour bus ride away - Santa Marta. It's southeast of Barranquilla. The drive there takes you thru the playa, I guess that would be the same as a delta, then along the beach and finally into Santa Marta. There is a big mountain range on one side and the Caribean on the other side. I didn't really see much of the city itself as we spent our time at the beach.

I moved out of the hotel in downtown to a less expensive hotel on the south side of town. The area is called Soledad. The hotel here is much cheaper.

This week has been mostly exploring and learning the area, where the shopping centers are, etc.

I used to teach English as a foreign language in Barranquilla, Colombia. Now I'm retired and traveling throughout South America.

I'm from Kennewick, Washington, USA. In my previous life, as I call it, I was an IT guy, systems administrator, computer tech, as well as a shipping/receiving guy and also worked as a merchandising guy in a RV/Camping store.
