Thanksgiving in Puerto Penasco, Mexico

Dec 2, 2008

This year Cheryl and I spent Thanksgiving in Puerto Penasco Mexico. Rocky Point, as it is known to most Americans, is located near the north end of the Sea of Cortez on the Mexico west coast. We left mid-morning Thursday, arrived in Rocky Point about 4 hours later. We stayed at the Laos Mar hotel, which is one of the 'Sandy Beach' hotels. There is the sandy beach area on the north side of town, and the rocky shore side to the south. The beach is beautiful, sandy, and warm.

The Laos Mar is one of the least expensive hotels with a Sea view. But it is very nice. Although there is no refrigerator or microwave oven in the rooms. They do have a nice pool and hot tub. We explored around town, both by walking and by driving. Outside the tourist district the town of Puerto Penasco is really no different from any other small country town anywhere. Of course there are some differences in the way some things work - like traffic lights. Many of the traffic lights do not have a yellow light, they go from green to blinking green to red. And most of the Alto (stop) signs are treated as yield signs. The seafood is fantastic - they catch it right there within sight of shore. If you can you have to buy some of the fresh seafood and bring it back home. Nothing from any store can match it for freshness. We left for home on saturday so I could be back in time for a band gig saturday night. This is one place we will definitely visit again.
